Musical Will Be Disney’s Aladdin Jr.!

Aladdin Jr. logo horizontal

We are excited to announce that Seth Boyden’s fifth graders will be presenting Disney’s Aladdin Jr. from June 12 to June 14.

Please join the PTA in welcoming our new director, Vanessa Jones! Ms. Jones’s experience ranges from performing on Broadway to teaching and directing students at NJPAC, and we are thrilled to have her at Seth Boyden! Fifth-grade families can expect to receive information about the show and auditions in the coming weeks. This year’s production will have action, adventure, and maybe even a rapping genie! Please encourage your students to participate.

As always, we need lots of help to make the show a success! We have volunteer opportunities for everyone—whether you have always wanted to know what goes on backstage, or you’re a theater expert hoping to share your knowledge and skills with the next generation. There are jobs big and small, and all are important for this year’s fifth graders to shine!

Please visit this signup genius link or contact Heather Heinnickel at [email protected] to tell us how you can help!

Zapato Brothers Talk Avocados with Seth Boyden Students

zapato brothers
Rolando Zapato, left, and his brother Humberto.

Rolando Zapato, the head custodian at Seth Boyden, and his brother Humberto visited classrooms last week to share information about their family avocado farm in Colombia.

Their presentation included information about avocado farming and  childhood stories, and the students even got to taste guacamole. We are so fortunate to have Rolando’s expertise, kind heart and wealth of information at our school, and we look forward to hearing more from him.

Jazz Concert for Black History Month

jazz concertSeth Boyden students and teachers had the privilege of hearing some great jazz during two assemblies on Thursday that featured a quintet from the Bufford School of Music in West Orange.

Drummer Greg Bufford led the band in playing different types of jazz for the audience, and talked to students about the music’s origins in Africa, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad,  Brazil, and the U.S.

The wonderful musicians (Belden Bullock on upright bass, David Braham on piano, Doris Spears on vocals, and Lance Bryant on saxophone) had kids and teachers dancing in their seats with their renditions of songs like Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train,” Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” and Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” along with examples of various types of jazz and rhythms from all over the world.

Mr. Bufford had students come up and play some beats with the band, got teachers and students to do the limbo, and ended each hour answering students’ questions about jazz, the musicians, and their instruments.  It was a fantastic addition to the school’s celebration of Black History Month; don’t be surprised if your SB student now wants to learn to play or sing jazz!

Liberty Science Center Assembly

Liberty Science Center assembly experiments
Marisela from the Liberty Science Center made static electricity and used it to attract Rice Krispies to a balloon with the help of two student volunteers. Andrew poured liquid nitrogen into boiling water, resulting in a LOT of condensation!

Cries of “that’s so cool!” were heard in the Seth Boyden auditorium on Friday as students watched the “Science Circus” presentation from Liberty Science Center.

Students watched, and several participated, as Marisela and Andrew, two of LSC’s Traveling Science Program presenters, taught us about various aspects of static electricity, states of matter, air pressure, and temperature.

Everyone got to see Rice Krispies fly in reaction to static electricity, watch air pressure crush a soda can, and learn what happens when a balloon goes into a vat of liquid nitrogen (hint: think pancake).

Assemblies like this are funded by the PTA and are a great compliment to the curriculum.

(Thanks to Susanna Einstein for the write-up and photos!)

Another Great Turkey Trot Is in the Books

We had another great Turkey Trot on Saturday morning! Thank you to all of the enthusiastic runners and walkers who braved the cold and dodged all those snowmelt puddles. A huge thank you also goes out to Alison Poe, who worked so hard to make this such a well-organized, fun, and inclusive event; Kevin Kraft, who played the role of emcee and completed the course on stilts; and the rest of the volunteers and donors who made the event possible.

The winners were Michael Postaski of Maplewood and Seth Boyden’s very own Caryn Gehrke, also of Maplewood!

Help Us Make ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr.’ a Hit!

Beauty and the Beast Jr.This year’s 5th Grade Musical will be “Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” and we are looking for parent volunteers to help us make the show a success.

The performance will be in late May, but the planning is beginning now. As most of you know, this is one of the biggest events of your student’s years at Seth Boyden, so we need lots of parent involvement. It’s also one of the most fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities you can find; just ask the parents who made “The Lion King” such a smash hit last year.

Kelly Heinze will once again be our director, and we need lots of budding stage moms and dads to help produce the show, manage the cast, design and build the sets, run the lights and technology, document some rehearsals and performances with photos and video, coordinate paperwork and equipment with the district, and more.

If you are interested in signing up to help in any way, please contact [email protected]!
