Week of 1/18/13

Board of Education Budget Meeting
Wed, Feb 20th, at 7:30 pm, in the district meeting room at 525 Academy Street, the Board of Education will have a Budget Workshop in which the school district budget for next year will be discussed. The budget process will move very quickly between now and the end of February when Governor Christie reveals how much state funding districts can expect, so the next few weeks are quite important in terms of next year’s school budget.
Sat, Feb 23rd – Silent Auction get tix now – there are a limited number of tables – please see flyer or click on link
The SB Winter Auction will be this Saturday, Feb 23 at The Club at Orange Lawn, South Orange.  Part of every auction are the Special Teacher Raffles.  NOt being there, does not mean YOU or your CHILD will miss out.  Download the teacher experience form for this year’s opportunities.  You can also be part of the 50/50 drawing too!  Have fun and good luck.
Hi Everybody,
I wanted to let you know that because the district-wide date for the Big Read School Event falls on the day AFTER our Black History Month Open House, we have decided to postpone OUR BIG READ EVENT UNTIL the next WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6. That doesn’t mean you should stop reading…we’re three weeks away. I had the opportunity to meet with some third graders last week to talk about the event and the books we’re reading. They had great, thoughtful questions. Their class is reading “Out of my Mind” together and they are into it! It made me realize what a fun book group discussion we’re all going to have on March 6. Don’t forget that our library has many copies, and there are also copies available at the public libraries. You can also buy the books at either Words or Sparkhouse. There’s still lots of time to get in on the fun!
If you’d like to be a moderator for our book discussion, please contact me. We need lots of parents to keep our conversations flowing; it’s a fun, easy, just-show-up-and-do-it opportunity to volunteer and we’d love to have you. Contact me if you’re interested at [email protected].
Thanks and happy reading!
Coming Up

The lists for the 1st grade teachers vary slightly. Additionally, if your child is in a multi-age class, she/he will have a different list of supplies to purchase.

If your child is already in a multi-age class, please use the 2nd grade supply list for your supplies.

Strawberry Fields E-Loop

First, many thanks to our ever level-headed Julie Burch for serving as the e-loop coordinator for several years! We will miss you and your family!

Second, this summer, we will be rebooting our e-loop. We will continue to use an e-loop to communicate to our broader community (current families, alums, other interested parties) but we are taking the opportunity to clean up the member list. This will likely require you to go through a very quick re-registering process. Stay tuned!

On behalf of the Seth Boyden PTA, thank you for another GREAT year! Have a fun, relaxing, safe summer!

Important Meetings About Special Ed
The district will be holding two meetings next week on special education issues:

4/16 – Understanding Inclusion in the Elementary Schools

The invitation flyer and a FAQ on inclusion are attached.

4/19 – Special Education and Changes to the Secondary Schools

The changes referenced in the attached invitation are outlined in this section of the district website:

Some parents and guardians have asked how the implementation of IB-MYP in the middle schools and changes to academic placement in the middle schools and high school may impact students with special needs. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss this with administrators and school leaders.

Download flyers here. Hope to see many of you there!

Fewer than 10% of our townspeople vote in the Board of Ed elections! Which is shocking and alarming considering how much of our two towns’ budgets are allocated to the schools. There are 6 candidates vying for 3 positions, so your votes really matter!!

Please educate yourselves on the candidates’ positions and VOTE on Tuesday, April 17. Polls are open from 2pm-9pm.
