3/16/20: Letter From Mrs. Glander

Good Afternoon Seth Boyden Families,

If your child was absent from school and did not take home their book baggies and classroom supplies, or if you require hard copies of the remote learning lessons, the district will be delivering these items to Seth Boyden families tomorrow, Tuesday,  March 17, 2020.

Teachers were asked to identify any students that they were aware of that did not have access to the internet at home. All assignments can be completed on paper, but instructions are online. If you cannot access the online assignments and need a paper copy, please email me at [email protected].  Please do not go to the board office for the materials as the district is trying to limit the amount of people by assigning specific time slots for the other elementary schools, and providing home delivery for all Seth Boyden families.

Information on logging into Google classroom was mailed home by the District on Friday and if you haven’t gotten it, you should be getting it today or tomorrow. If you need additional support logging into the google classrooms sites for the assignments please visit the Nursing Services/Coronavirus update area under tech info and resources on the district website.

For students with special education services, please see the email sent by Dr. Morana to all families yesterday and follow her instructions.  Please continue to check your email consistently as we continue to provide updates as soon as possible.

We want to thank the teachers, staff and families for the overwhelming amount of support during this tumultuous time. The health of our staff, students and families is paramount and we hope that all of you are healthy and safe.  Thank you also for your patience and flexibility as we continue to develop plans to address this unthinkable situation.

Please take care and be well and reach out with any questions.  I will do my best to get back to you as quickly as possible.

Mrs. Glander

Fifth Grade Baby Photos and Yearbook Best Wishes!

It’s time for two of our favorite Seth Boyden traditions: Seth Boyden fifth grade baby photos and best wishes for the yearbook!

baby photos

Please submit your fifth grader’s baby picture so it can be included in the school yearbook. It’s so fun to see how the kids have (or haven’t!) changed over the years!

The yearbook will also contain a “best wishes” section where you can send a message to a fifth grader or any student. The wishes are $4 each or 3 for $10. Each wish must be 30 words or fewer and you can send as many wishes as you would like.

Email your best wishes and photos by Friday, March 13, to [email protected]. Any questions? Check out the flyers below or contact Becky Hanger at that email or 347-268-6796.

Musical Will Be Disney’s Aladdin Jr.!

Aladdin Jr. logo horizontal

We are excited to announce that Seth Boyden’s fifth graders will be presenting Disney’s Aladdin Jr. from June 12 to June 14.

Please join the PTA in welcoming our new director, Vanessa Jones! Ms. Jones’s experience ranges from performing on Broadway to teaching and directing students at NJPAC, and we are thrilled to have her at Seth Boyden! Fifth-grade families can expect to receive information about the show and auditions in the coming weeks. This year’s production will have action, adventure, and maybe even a rapping genie! Please encourage your students to participate.

As always, we need lots of help to make the show a success! We have volunteer opportunities for everyone—whether you have always wanted to know what goes on backstage, or you’re a theater expert hoping to share your knowledge and skills with the next generation. There are jobs big and small, and all are important for this year’s fifth graders to shine!

Please visit this signup genius link or contact Heather Heinnickel at [email protected] to tell us how you can help!

Another Incredible Seth Boyden Auction!

Woodland decorated for 2020 seth boyden auction

The Seth Boyden Beer Garden auction, presented by Adamson Ramsey Homes, was a huge success! This is a massive collaborative effort, and it takes our entire Seth Boyden community to make it happen.

We owe a special thanks this year to Lauren and John Byers for leading the charge, and to Kelly Sanders, Anna Herbst, Kerstin Diehn and all of the auction committee members who worked so hard for many months to put this event together.

The food from Bradford’s Barr was delicious; the cheese table from Maplewood Wheelhouse was a huge hit; the craft brews from Four City Brewing and SOMA Brewing were on point; the decor by Patricia Sanchez was perfect; Nate Diana’s craftsmanship was on display with the stunning photo arbor; DJ Jen Jones Grieci did an amazing job as always; our bartenders were slinging drinks all night; and an army of volunteers sold tickets, ran credit cards, set up and took down decorations, and generally pulled together to make it an epic and successful night for our school.

Seth Boyden School Honors Dr. King

On Friday, Jan. 17, we had our first all-school assembly of the year in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Both Mrs. Glander and Ms. Murphy addressed the students about why there was no school on the holiday and talked about acts of kindness they can do for one other to honor Dr. King.

The students watched a brief educational video about his life and then the entire student body, led by Ms. Van Doornik and the 5th Grade Chorus, sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “We Shall Overcome,” and “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize.” All grades have been learning these songs in music and we hope you’ve heard your child singing them at home.

Turkey Trot 2019

turkey trot staff photo

Despite the 30-degree temperatures, we had more than 200 runners, walkers and trotters for our annual Turkey Trot on Saturday. Including all of the kids who did the fun run, we had a record number of participants! We owe a huge thanks to our race sponsors: Adamson Ramsey Homes, Artificial Greens & Lawns, CKO Kickboxing Maplewood, The Fox & Falcon and the South Orange PBA.

This year’s race honored our late friend and Seth Boyden educator Joann Montilus, who lost her battle with breast cancer four years ago. Our teachers helped raise more than $600 in memory of Joann for Mary’s Place by the Sea, a respite home for women who are receiving treatment for cancer. Joann loved spending time there.

Thanks to Maureen Davenport for organizing the event and to all of our volunteers and participants who made the event possible.

2019 Fall Book Fair

book fair logoIt’s the most wonderful time of the year – the Seth Boyden Book Fair!

The book fair will be held in the upper gym from Monday, Dec. 2, to Thursday, Dec. 5. We will be open during school hours and will reopen for shopping during evening parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. This is a time for adults and accompanied children to browse and shop. Children may not attend alone.

We will once again offer a selection of bargain books starting at $1, with most no more than $3, in addition to our main book fair titles. We encourage adults to send a few dollars with your student on their class shopping days (see below).

We are also looking for volunteers to help students create wish lists and fill orders during the fair, and for a few bakers to provide breakfast items for our teachers to enjoy during the teacher preview on Monday. It’s fine if you can’t commit to an entire slot, just indicate your availability in the comments. Book Fair Volunteers Sign Up Genius

We have one copy of most books and can’t guarantee availability. Please note bargain books must be purchased with cash.

Achieve Grants in Action: Seth Boyden Teachers Share Their Experiences

This article came from the Achieve Foundation’s Oct. 23 newsletter:

Mrs. Tuohy and Mrs. BrodyOn Tuesday October 21, Maggie Tuohy and Susan Brody ran an after-school session for their colleagues at Seth Boyden School. In a packed library, Maggie and Susan shared their experience at Hog Island Audubon Camp, a week which was made possible through a grant for summer professional development through Achieve’s Riecke Fellowship.

Their presentation, starting with the natural mystery of the day (discovering what shell was in front of them) and running through barriers to and benefits from outdoor education, had the room buzzing with enthusiasm. Teachers noted that they had experienced breakthroughs in the SB Garden with some students: they found focus and leadership skills which they struggled to access in a classroom. Many expressed a commitment to integrating outdoor education into their curriculum in any way possible moving forward.

The Michelle T. Riecke Fund was established in 2003 in memory of former Board of Education president Shelley Riecke, who believed that teachers are our schools’ greatest asset and the key to maximizing student achievement. Maggie Tuohy had met Shelley much earlier in her career, when Shelley released butterflies into the school’s garden, so receiving a Reicke grant this year was that much more poignant and meaningful to her.

We owe a huge thanks to Sabena Khan and Lysna Marzani for organizing the entire event, and to the many families who helped with food, games, activities, setup and clean up!

The MAC scholars from CHS, many of whom were Seth Boyden alums, also volunteered and were incredibly helpful. It was great to have them back!

Looking for Library Volunteers

The library is ready for the new school year, and we are looking for parent volunteers to help the students check out books and put them back, which means Mrs. Poutre has more time to work with the students.

If you have even 20 minutes per week to volunteer, it will make a big difference in books being available for our students.

Please fill out this form with your availability and Marianne Lloyd will get in touch. There are hours available after school as well as when students come to the classroom.
