We Stand Against AAPI Hate

Stop AAPI Hate Image via https://stopaapihate.org/

As a PTA, we see and acknowledge the pain and anger that so many of our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) families and community members are feeling after the murder of Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Xiaojie Tan, and Daoyou Feng in Atlanta and the increasing anti-Asian racism and violence that people of Asian descent are experiencing.

We stand in solidarity with our AAPI families and community members. We stand against racism, xenophobia, bias, and prejudice in all forms and are deeply committed to equity and social and racial justice.

Please click here to read a letter written by Dr. Mia Charlene White, a local Black woman of African American and Korean descent who organizes with SOMA Justice, in association with our local community and co-signed by many local groups and residents including South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and Maplewood Mayor Frank McGehee. It contains valuable resources for working in solidarity to dismantle white supremacy and stop AAPI hate.

Black History Month in Music

In celebration of Black History Month, Ms. Van Doornik, our music teacher, re-introduced students to Seth Boyden’s unofficial school song, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.”

Click here for the rendition from Kirk Franklin that Ms. Van Doornik shared with her classes, which was followed by the students singing it themselves.

Ask your child to sing it for you!

This printable, to honor the impact of music in Black culture, is courtesy of Ditto Kids magazine, an anti-racism magazine for kids. The printable is great for both coloring and expanding on the meaning of this important and powerful song with your children.

Winter Nature Activities

From Seth Boyden Garden Teacher Ms. Tuohy:

Birdseed Cookies

Yummy treats for our winter bird friends!

  • Mix unflavored gelatin with boiling water.
  • Use 2 or 3 tablespoons of gelatin to a cup of water, stir until dissolved.
  • Stir in birdseed until the liquid is mixed through and the birdseed is wet but not in a puddle.
  • Place the mixture inside a greased cookie cutter or muffin tin.
  • Place a straw in each seed cookie to create the hole for hanging the seed cookie.
  • Let chill for a few hours before releasing the cookies from the molds.
  • Hang on trees for feathered friends to enjoy!

Read The Snow Tree by Caroline Repchuk to find how other creatures have brought color and gifts to the winter whiteness.

For more information, visit One Little Project – Bird Seed Ornaments.

Snow Scene/Art

Fill an aluminum pan with snow. Using items from home, build a scene and tell a story. Add paint or food coloring if you wish.

Animal Tracking

Visit our Seth Boyden Garden to see who has been checking on the garden and missing us!

School Picture Make-Ups / Retakes on Dec. 12

Did your child miss the original photo day? You can still order photos online before Dec. 12 at mylifetouch.com with Picture ID AL208190Q1, or stop by school and grab a photo form, then send it in with a check on Dec. 12.

Did your child get a photo on the original day, but it includes closed eyes, bad hair, a weird expression, and/or snot? In that case, you can get a retake. Just send your child to school on Dec. 12 with the package that those photos were delivered in. The photographer will scan the package to get all the information needed.

Questions? Email [email protected] or reach out to our contact at Lifetouch Photography, [email protected]

Meeting to Discuss Facilities and Integration Plans

Our school district is considering a major reconfiguration to address overcrowding, segregation and facility issues. This plan, which you can read about in the Village Green, will be discussed at a series of community meetings with Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Ficarra over the next several weeks.

The Seth Boyden community is encouraged to attend the meeting scheduled at our school on Wednesday, May 30, at 7:30pm. If you can’t make it Wednesday, see the other dates listed below. This plan could have a major impact on our students’ educational future, so please attend and make your voice heard!
